Colossal Head Sculpture Candle
Modelled on the colossal ‘Head of a Youth’, a famous and spectacular artefact from the Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon, this soy-wax candle sculpture pays tribute to the beautiful and broken pieces of antiquity which never cease to beguile modern onlookers. Reputedly depicting the world-conquering Macedonian King, Alexander the Great, the piece simultaneously celebrates the classical idealised form of beauty while the break severing the head just below the eyes is testament to the violence which underpinned that culture. It’s this combination of the exactitude of artistic endeavour paired with the random defacement inflicted by time that reflects back to us our capacity for both exquisite creation and brutal destruction.
