Master Shin In-Young is the head blacksmith of Master Shin's Anvil and the keeper of the oldest blacksmith shop in South Korea, established in 1845. He began his apprenticeship at 13 and achieved master status at 17, an unprecedented feat then and now. In 2016, the Korean government named him the country's first Intangible Cultural Treasure, the highest title it can bestow, in recognition of his rare skills and traditional craft. Working from the same shop, using the same centuries-old techniques, he forges roughly 40 designs of knives and farm tools entirely by hand.
