Behind the Brand

Underwater Weaving Studio

Founded in Maine by artist Erin Pollard, Underwater Weaving Studio treats the woven basket as an anchor in the home rather than a decorative afterthought. Pollard grew up in the orbit of her family's diner and her mother Peggy's basket practice, which produced a collection for L.L.Bean and a run of home workshops through the 1980s and 90s. The studio's name borrows the old dismissal of "underwater basket weaving" as domestic busywork and turns it into a claim on the hands. Each piece is woven in Maine and Brooklyn, drawing on the region's Wabanaki and Shaker traditions and filtered through Pollard's own design background.
