19th C. French Woven Rattan Round Side Table
A round rattan side table in the French manner, the woven top surface bordered by a tight coiled rim and raised on four curved rattan legs joined at center by a hand-wrapped knot junction, a construction detail characteristic of fine French rattan work of the late 19th century. The legs splay outward from the knot and curve gently at the feet, giving the base a light, almost botanical quality. The overall silhouette is spare and confident.
The Perret et Vibert factory was among the most celebrated French rattan makers of the second half of the 19th century, and this table falls within the broader tradition of French conservatory and salon furniture that flourished during the Belle Époque. During the 19th century, rattan and bamboo were introduced as exotic imported materials and used extensively in French furniture design. Pieces of this type moved freely between garden rooms, conservatories, and drawing rooms, valued for their lightness and the warmth of the natural material against more formal interiors.
