About the artist
Aldous Bertram
Aldous Bertram is a Charleston-based interior designer, artist, and scholar whose work blends English romanticism with a richly layered, historically attuned point of view. Raised in a Queen Anne country house and educated at Cambridge—where he earned a PhD in 18th-century gardens and architecture—Aldous brings an uncommon depth of historical literacy to his interiors, watercolors, and decorative objects.
His rooms, much like his paintings, carry his unmistakable hand: saturated color, neoclassical whimsy, and a joyfully collected spirit that feels both worldly and entirely personal. After years in Palm Beach and the Bahamas working alongside designer Amanda Lindroth, Aldous has made Charleston his adopted home, finding in its architecture and eccentricities a familiar echo of Cambridge.
The author of Dragons & Pagodas, a visual history of Chinoiserie, Aldous continues to lecture widely and is currently at work on an illustrated volume with the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. His watercolors—ranging from interior renderings to house portraits and fantastical architectural studies—are sought after by designers and collectors alike.
