Aldous Bertram is a Charleston-based interior designer and artist known for his richly layered, historically informed watercolors. Raised in a Queen Anne country house in the village of Linton, Cambridgeshire, and later educated at Cambridge—where he earned a PhD in 18th-century gardens and architecture—he brings a rare depth of architectural literacy to his work. This exclusive collection for Wentworth translates some of Europe’s most remarkable interiors and architectural details into luminous, meticulously detailed studies, capturing the neoclassical whimsy, saturated color, and collected spirit that define his artistic hand.
Chinese Bedroom at Claydon House depicts one of the most celebrated examples of 18th-century English chinoiserie. Designed by the master carver Luke Lightfoot in the 1760s, the room is an exuberant display of carved fretwork, pagodas, scrolls, birds, and botanical ornament—all executed with extraordinary virtuosity. Bertram’s watercolor captures the fantasy and delicacy of the space, distilling its theatrical forms and kaleidoscopic detail into a serene and meticulously observed composition.
