Chinese Carved Hardwood Brush Pot

This carved hardwood brush pot is made in the traditional Chinese bitong form, a scholar’s desk accessory used to hold writing brushes. Cylindrical in shape with an open mouth, the vessel is deeply carved in high relief with a continuous scene of figures set within a landscape of trees and architectural elements.

The rim is finished with a carved key-fret border, a classical geometric motif frequently found in Chinese decorative arts. The dark, dense hardwood allows for crisp detailing and sculptural depth, inviting close inspection from all sides. Brush pots such as this were integral to the scholar’s studio, valued not only for function but for their ability to reflect cultural knowledge, craftsmanship, and narrative tradition.
