Chinese Carved Hardwood Brush Pot

This carved hardwood brush pot is made in the traditional Chinese bitong form, a scholar’s desk accessory used to hold writing brushes. Cylindrical in shape with an open mouth, the vessel is deeply carved in high relief with a continuous scene of figures set within a landscape of trees and architectural elements.

The rim is finished with a carved key-fret border, a classical geometric motif frequently found in Chinese decorative arts.
