Karelian Birch Lift-Top Cigarette Box
Crafted from Karelian birch, this mid-20th-century cigarette box centers on material and mechanism in equal measure. The highly figured veneer, dense with whorls and eye formations, wraps a compact rectilinear volume raised on a stepped plinth. At rest, it reads as a disciplined block of wood.
A concealed internal mechanism elevates the cigarettes when the lid is engaged, lifting them into view in a single upward motion before retracting cleanly back into the case. The action is controlled and deliberate, a small piece of domestic engineering embedded within a pared-back form. Minor surface wear is consistent with age and handling.
