19th C. Strie English Regency Jardinière
This large rectangular jardinière follows the English Regency vocabulary closely: tapered walls, raised recessed panel molding on each face, and a flat rope-molded rim above a stepped plinth base. Cast brass lion mask ring handles are applied to each short end, and the four feet are cast patinated metal in the form of hairy lion's paws — the monopodial foot drawn from Roman furniture precedent and standard to English and French neoclassical production from the 1790s onward. The interior retains its original zinc liner.
The exterior is painted in a custom strie finish, a glazing technique in which tinted glaze is dragged diagonally across a pale ground to produce fine, fabric-like striations, executed here in teal and cream with the direction shifting across panel borders. The combination of architectural form, leonine hardware, and a freshly painted surface gives the piece an interior designer's confidence without obscuring its period character.
