20th C. Italian Grand Tour Marble Lamp
This mid-20th century neoclassical marble lamp in urn form features a body carved with a fluted band beneath a beaded rim, raised on a stepped socle. Brass mounts run through the neck and base. Fitted with a new custom parchment shade and rewired for use.
Urn-form lamps like this one draw on the Grand Tour tradition, souvenirs and decorative objects made in Italy from the 18th century onward in forms lifted directly from ancient vases and funerary urns, meant to evoke the classical sites travelers had seen firsthand. By the mid-20th century, the form had become a durable decorative standard, produced in marble and carved with the same fluting and beading found on the originals, independent of any specific archaeological source.
